How Spotlight.ai Counts Active Users and License Usage

Last updated: October 14, 2026

Overview

This article explains how Spotlight.ai measures license usage: which license types exist, who counts as an active user, and how this differs from the unique users measure in the weekly usage reports.

License types

Spotlight.ai offers three license types:

  • Value Intelligence

  • Qualification Intelligence

  • Conversational Intelligence

How usage is measured

Usage is based on a rolling 6-month period. At any point in time, Spotlight.ai looks at the previous 6 months of activity to determine who is active.

What counts as an active user

A user is considered active if, within the rolling 6-month period, they did at least one of the following:

A single qualifying action in the period is enough. Users who have done neither in that period are not counted as active.

Active users are counted among users who have a license. Users without a license are not included in the active user count.

How unique users are counted in weekly usage reports and in the analytics page

The weekly usage reports and the adoption tab in analytics use a separate, narrower measure over different periods. In those reports, a unique user is anyone who, within the selected time period, performed at least one of these actions:

  • Edited a stage question

  • Edited a value discovery question

  • Downloaded an asset

Opening a page on its own does not count toward unique users in the weekly reports. For details on the reports and how to access them, see Getting Weekly Usage Reports.

Summary

  • Active users: licensed users who edited any activity or opened any page in Spotlight.ai during the rolling 6-month period.

  • Unique users (weekly usage reports): users who edited a stage or value discovery question, or downloaded an asset, in the reported period.

Frequently asked questions

If a licensed user only opens a page, are they active? Yes. Opening any page in Spotlight.ai within the rolling 6-month period makes a licensed user active.

Are users without a license counted as active? No. Active users are counted among users who have a license.

What happens when a user stops using Spotlight.ai? Because usage is measured over a rolling 6-month period, a user who has had no qualifying activity for 6 months is no longer counted as active.

Why does the weekly usage report show fewer users than my active user count? The two measures differ. The active user count covers a rolling 6-month period and can include simply opening a page. The weekly report's unique user count covers the reported period and only includes editing questions or downloading assets.
